January 19, 2011 -emails

Dad, Mom, Mariah, Hannah, Maren, Hallie, Sadie and Jaine,
Thanks for doing that for me. If you haven't sent that money in the mail already you don't have to, just put it on my card. If you have thats great, I prefer using cash, I am more concious of what I spend when I do. I forgot to mention last time that I am in a tri-panionship, they didn't know where the bank was because they have cards to use and their money is dirict deposited. Having the addresses will help lots.

Uncle Caleb sent me an email about possibly meeting up with them, I guess Pres. Miller isn't really excited about that but he said maybe we'll get to see eachother before I leave, but not right now. That would be really cool.

Holy cow, I had now idea that that many of our visa waiters have left already, that made me a little excited, and pretty nervous also. I am happy to be here and I feel like whatever happens is meant to be as well.

Sounds like things are as busy as usual, I hope everything is good. Hannah, what part in the musical did you get. It would be legit to chat, I hope I can get it figured out. I don't know if it will work but I know that Mark chatted with Hyrum on his mission, so it should.

We are living with a older couple, the Bonnisons, I'm pretty sure Sis. Bonnison is crazy but Bro. Bonnison is cool. They served a mission in Virginia and know Uncle Ethan and Aunt Georgia and would be tickled if you sent me their phone number so they could chat it up with them sometime.

Anyways, I'm going to try to send you a little more later, but I need to do some other stuff now.

Love,
Elder Waite

Yes I still have your debit card. I'm going to leave it up to you to do what you want with the money, I'm not to worried about it, whatever happens I have both mine and your debit cards. I have $50 in my emergency travel cash wallet(that sounds dumb but I really do have one...) Maybe you could just send another $50 so that I could have the 100 that I'm supposed to, and then put the rest on my card. I have about $30 until I'll start using my card for different stuff. I hope that makes sense. Its crazy what a small world it is, and how many people know people from somewhere. We don't spend to much time with the Bonnisons, just when we are passing through to go to the basement and when we are cooking food. We usually say hi when we get home, but we sort of have different schedules so we don't have to see them, which is nice. Sis. Bonnison doesn't like us very much, we can tell it was Bro. Bonnisons idea to have us move in. We think he just needed some relatively sane people to talk to every once in a while. I'd like to get to know him better, he is a gun lover and retired from the army.

We are not in the same bedroom, I am out in the main room, I hope you can make sense of my drawing. I sleep on the futon. its nice to be alone out there, but i have to sleep where they can see them. we probalby walked 4 miles yesterday, but that was lots. we provide our own lunches and breakfasts, members feed us dinner. I don't have much time, I'll write you a letter this week

Hello Family,

Man I have so much to tell you, I'm going to start with sat. morning. My roommates and members of my district left around 5 and woke up around 3 to finish packing. So I didn't get much sleep. I was supposed to leave at 7. Nothing exciting happened until i was on the bus. I can't tell you how weird it felt to be outside of the MTC looking at it and thinking about the last two months. It was a really funny feeling. We got to the mission office around 8, had breakfast met the President and his wife, had interview and such. we were supposed to meet our companions at 10. We were notified that only 3 lucky missionary's would be getting to speak Spanish, there are 19 visa waiters. I was sure that I wouldn't be picked to go to a Spanish speaking area. During my interview with the Pres. he asked me how my Spanish was. I said 5... meaning on a scale of 1 to 100 but i think he though I meant on a scale of one to ten, because I was put in Spanish area!! I couldn't believe it. Only 3 of 19 and I was one of them.

I was pretty nervous when I found out, but its been a blast so far. I am companions with Elders Pedera and Rutherford, both are from Cali and E' Pedera is pretty much a native speaker but also speaks perfect English. Our ride that took us back to our house is named Joe, and he is homeless, at least that's what I thought. He looks homeless. he is a guy that lives around this area he actually has a house but none of the missionary have ever seen it... so it was culture shock right off the bat, even here in the salt lake valley.

Our area is called Olympic Park 3, we are in Kearns. It is a combination of two stakes to make a ward. It is a very strong ward, with lots of opportunities to use the members. After we went to the house and dropped off my stuff we went right into some appointments we had. I can't believe how many non-members around there are. And how many people speak spanish, we are in a pretty poor area but it still suprised me.

My first house we went to was a young less active fam, they were baptised not to long ago but they haven't been coming to church, we taught the Plan of Salvation, I taught about the fall and the telestial kingdom. I didn't say very much.. I was really nervous. It was really fun though. After that we had a dinner appointment with a family who moved here from Blackfoot, they fed us really good food. chile relleno, and it was hot! but i really liked, i handled it better that both my companions though. All the rest of our food has been pretty mild.

I'll just tell you a little about one of our new inv. His name is Sergio, we met him on Sunday He just moved in with a member family, I don't think he knew what he was getting into. He doesn't speak any English and its been cool to talk to him, what little I can, in Spanish. We taught him last night, he had a few questions right at first, we answered them and I think he even accepted our answers. We taught him the first lesson, I don't remember what part I taught but the spirit was there. Especially when he prayed at the end. It was really fun, I feel closer to this investigator because I met him right off the bat, all the others I have been introduced to.

Spanish is ok, its pretty hard for me to speak but I can usually understand what everybody is saying, and I can read the scriptures. I don't like the Mexican accent, it is so hard to understand... the word 'pues' is sort of like the plauge of the word 'like' in english, but now that I look for it I can understand more. The only problem is my comp uses it more than anyone esle.

I'm loving this. Kearns is cool.

I love you guys and hope you are well.

Hello Family,
I’m just finishing up packing. It’s been fun. I’ve mostly just stuffed all my stuff into my big bag, it weighs about 75 pounds. I don’t have anything in my little bag yet. I’m mailing this stuff home, you know that because you’ve opened this package. I really enjoyed everything, Thanks!
I hope the nativity makes it home safe. My new mission home address is…
8060 S. 615 E.
Sandy, UT 84070
I don’t know if you are supposed to have this but here is the phone number 801-568-9003. Don’t tell them you got that from me. Things are great, I’m really rushed so I hope this makes sense.
Don’t worry, I bought some gloves and I have my coat so this ol’ Utah chill isn’t going to phase me a bit. I might have to buy another backpack because my other one hasn’t turned up for a while. I’m pretty sure another missionary took it, which doesn’t surprise me because there are lots of them like that one around it’s pretty easy to confuse them.
The blue and gold stuff* is just for padding and so you guys will remember FFA. I love you guys hope everything is good. This scares me half to death: I might be teaching real people tomorrow!
Love,
Elder Waite

Dear Family,
Sorry mom, I didn’t realize you sent me an email until after I had sent mine off. I only had 30 seconds to read it. I think I got the general idea of it and hope I answer all your questions. I have been getting Uncle Greg’s emails, I haven’t been responding to them, I don’t usually have time. I like getting them though. I’m pretty sure you can get on my email. I don’t know what the web address if but probably something about my LDS mail. My username is camdenadin and the password is byufootball. So could you print them off and send them to me please, thanks. Thanks for all you do for me.
I don’t remember anything else you wrote or questions you had. I hope you all had a good New Year. I did. If you have more questions, just DE them.
Love,
Elder Waite

Hello everyone!

How is everyone doing? How was the New Years Party? We didn't party it up to much here, actually we didn't party at all... I was thinking about the riot we had last year, I hope you had as much fun as we all did then. Its been pretty weird here lately, I think that our MTC experience has been pretty different than most other missionary's, being in here for the three biggest holidays of the year is different. Its been fun and I've enjoyed it but I'm not sure we have been learning as much as we usually would. the past two weeks we've had lots of different teachers come in as subs, and because of the semester change all the teachers who are students are getting switched around also. Its been interesting.

This place sort of shuts down during holidays. The book store hasn't been open since Thursday, and the mail room has only been mailing stuff out for a couple hours every day, so none of us have gotten mail for a while. So i hope everything is fine on your end. The Book Store couldn't have picked a worse time to close, Friday and Saturday I was pretty sick with flu like symptoms. I think I ate something that wasn't cooked or something. I ran out of my pepto, luckily the front desk was open and they gave me pretty good supply. Fasting was pretty rough yesterday because I had pretty much been fasting the for the two days before also, I don't think there was a missionary here that was happier to see food than I was last night. However my happiness was short lived because while I was at dinner I saw E' Cox, he was supposed to leave today. I've been talking to him some and he told me that he has some health problems. Poor guy, I feel bad for him, so whenever you guys see him, just give him a big hug from me. he told me the doctor was sending him to Logan, and his fam was coming at 6, so i had to say goodbye to him. I'm better now, and feel pretty good.

No word as far as re-assignments go, I'm hoping for the Temple Square mission, but that is probably not going to happen. I'll be excited wherever I go.

Man I love you guys, it was good to hear your voices. Sadie acted a little scared when she heard my voice, that was kinda funny. Sorry I didn't get to talk to everyone.
